There they give a report on their observations and actions to the doctor or emergency staff. After each run, emergency workers are required to document the entire trip and what kinds of procedures were given. They will also need to replace any supplies in the truck that need it and they will need to check equipment for proper working order. If a patient has a contagious disease, then the emergency medical technicians have to decontaminate the truck and make a report to the proper authorities.
Education & Training:
In order to start your training as an emergency medical technician, you will be required to have a high school diploma or GED. There are progressive levels involved in the training of emergency professionals. The first level of training is known as basic level.
The EMT-Basic level involves extensive coursework in learning emergency medical skills. This includes managing trauma, respiratory emergencies, cardiac problems, and patient assessments. The courses are also combined with hands on practice with an emergency department or ambulance company. You’ll be given instruction and practice in how to deal with fractures, cardiac arrest, childbirth, bleeding and first aid.
You’ll be taught how to use and maintain medical equipment, such as suction devices, backboards, stretchers and intravenous fluid machines. Once you’ve graduated from your emergency medical technician course, you’ll be ready to take the state administered examination. This examination is very tough and thorough. You have to pass this exam before you are licensed and can legally work as an emergency workers.
There are many schools that offer EMT training, including online schools. Whether you decide to go with an online school or a school locally in your area, you’ll want to be sure that the school’s training is going to be approved by your state. Each state has their own rules and regulations on what is acceptable. Therefore, be sure to check with your state on the approval of any school you seriously are considering attending. You also have an option of studying with a private organization, such as an ambulance company or a hospital. Earnings for emergency medical technicians depend on the geographic location of their jobs and their experience level. The average hourly wage for an emergency medical technician can range anywhere from $15 an hour to $35 an hour.
