Having an EMT certification can be a very rewarding and exciting opportunity into the field of emergency medical services. This field allows you to be right in the middle of all the action, helping to save lives of others. The challenges are great, every day is going to be something new and unexpected. You won’t have time to think, and you will need to rely on all of the skills you’ve learned during your training to get you through the day.

So when you’re going to be choosing your training courses to get your EMT certification, you’ll want to be sure that you just don’t choose the cheapest courses available. Bargain hunting and medical technology is never a good combination. Think about the people’s lives that will be in your hands, do you really want to cut corners on your training? Sometimes choosing the cheapest way to EMT certification can backfire and end up costing you in wasted time and money. You want to take enough courses that will prepare you for your EMT certification.

One of the things you’ll want to consider when choosing the right kind of courses for your EMT certification is the length of the courses. There are various lengths to the courses. Some courses can be finished in as little as two to three weeks, while others will take 6 months or more. Most of the programs will be anywhere from 120 to 140 hours. Your classroom time may also be anywhere from 120 hours or more. Although you can take accelerated courses that will be finished in 2 to 4 weeks, you want to give yourself enough time to thoroughly understand the body of information.

Next, you’ll want to evaluate the proper course content. You want to be able to assess, stabilize, and treat the patient while he or she is being transported to the hospital. This is easier said than done, especially when you’re dealing with high stress emergency situations. The key is to be able to deal with them quickly and efficiently. Not only do you want thorough written material, but also hands on learning.

Your hands on learning training will have class time and practical training, to help you get EMT certification. You’ll be prepared for any basic situation that you will encounter as an EMT or paramedic. After you have taken the proper courses, you’ll go on to take your NREMT test. In order to take this test, you’ll have to be certified in CPR. It is a good idea to not only get basic CPR training but also advanced CPR training. In addition, even though you may not be required to take these, you should think about getting certified in IV maintenance, advanced airway, and glucometer.

After you’re done with your EMT training, you’ll be awarded a certificate from your training facility. Next, you’ll take that certificate and all other required documents to the NREMT facility and take your exams. If the training facility does not give you a certificate, then most likely it is not a state-approved and accredited program. Therefore, you’ll want to make sure that wherever you get your training from, that it is state approved, so that you can get y our EMT certification.
