EMS Lights: Constantly Evolving

Paramedics, nurses, first responders, emergency medical technicians and full-fledged physicians very often are required to respond to many different medical emergencies. There are also a wide variety of lights that are used on the emergency services vehicles, known as EMS lights. There are different rules on the color of the lights and they depend on the state. Most states allow whoever is involved in handling the medical emergencies to be able to use warning lights on the trucks and vehicles.

Emergency medical services is a field of service that is designed to take care of anyone who finds themselves in a medical emergency. This makes having the right kind of emergency medical services lights very important. The Emergency medical services professionals have to treat many patients right there on the spot, giving them first aid or even transporting them to the hospital. Each second is critical and any delays could end up causing permanent injury or even death.

Ambulances usually have various colored lights on them. There are also rescue vehicles that use these lights at times. These units may be used in extrication from accidents, search and rescue operations, or even water rescue vehicles.

Ambulances are allowed to use these lights globally. It does not matter if the person who is driving the ambulance has no medical background at all, the lights are allowed on the truck. Although most of the ambulances are usually motor vehicles, air ambulance vehicles, such as helicopters are also used to transport the injured patient. Paramedics, emergency medical technicians, doctors, and nurses are allowed to use EMS lights on their vehicles as well. The rules regarding their uses will vary from state to state and from country to country.

In most states, emergency medical services lights are usually red and white. Volunteer EMTS may have other colored lights. In some states, the emergency medical technician volunteers use blue lights on the vehicles, a more common color. In other states, green is used to distinguish themselves from the fire fighters, police and other emergency medical services.

In most states, volunteer emergency medical technicians are allowed to use some form of emergency lights. In the state of New York, volunteer emergency medical technicians use green lights, but also have the right to use red lights and sirens in the event of transporting a patient to the hospital. Emergency lights are an effective aid in helping those who are involved in providing critical and urgent medical services, but the different laws in each state tend to complicate things as they cross borders.

Strobe, halogen, and ubiquitous light emitting diodes, or LED is used in emergency lights. Different manufacturers offer these kinds of lights in various combinations in order to offer more flexibility to the emergency medical services market. LED has made the emergency medical services lights a lot more energy efficient, thereby saving money for the organizations using them. The color use of EMS lights is usually decided by the state in which the vehicle is going to be used.

These colors can be controlled electronically in LED. This enables the users to have a choice of different kinds of colors on their trucks and vehicles as they cross state lines. These emergency lights are available for both temporary mounts and permanent mounts. Permanent mounting may involve screwing and drilling them down.

Temporary mounts are usually done with suction cups, magnets, or adhesive pads. The lights can come in pre-set standard sizes or they can be custom fitted for each particular vehicle. EMS lights may also come with rack fitting brackets or customized racks. Choices are infinite, even with the mounting brackets, with options including tight brackets, cross brackets, or light fitting plates.
